Glossary of Terms

A comprehensive collection of terms associated with Duane Geisness Fine Art Prints.

Allegory

Allegory has been used widely throughout the history of art, and in all forms of artwork as a devise in which characters or events represent or symbolize ideas and concepts. A reason for this is that allegory has immense power of illustrating complex ideas and concepts in a digestible, concrete way.

AP – Artist Proof

Traditionally, Artist Proof prints are the first prints (perhaps 10 or 20) from a limited edition run. They are, in essence, a proof of the rest of the run. It’s similar to a wine sommelier pouring a small sip of wine for the host to approve the full bottle of wine. If the host approves, the sommelier serves the wine to the full table. Likewise, if the artist approves the quality of the proof run, the printer continues with the full run. These prints are considered the best of the best. These prints are given to the artist in addition to the regular print run. Artists sell these prints at a higher price due to their higher quality.

Archive Collection

Images published years after they were originally painted.

Archival Pigmented Printing

Archival pigment printing denotes a printmaking process incorporating refined particles of pigment that are resilient to the environmental elements that commonly degrade and erode dye molecules shortening the life of a print.

A pigment-based ink uses solid particles of pigment powder suspended in the ink itself to transfer color. This type of ink is more durable than dye-based inks because it resists fading for longer and doesn't smudge as much when drying.

Artist’s Canvas Edition

The Artist’s Canvas Edition is a limited edition (329 copies) printed on archival, acid-free artist’s canvas. Each print is personally signed and numbered by Duane.

Atelier

Literally meaning “workshop,” atelier came to define a group of craftsmen or artists who learn from a master.

Chiaroscuro

When you order a Conservation Edition print you’ll see the image as it will appear in your print.
